Vacuum degasser is a special equipment used to treat the drilling fluid. Its very important effect is restoring the drilling fluid's density, stabilizing the viscosity of drilling fluid, reducing the drilling well cost. When the drilling fluid do not contain the gas, the function of vacuum degasser is a bigger power mud agitator.

The type of vacuum degasser is Vertical type.

Horizontal Decanter Centrifuge's Working Principle

1). The Separation principle
The separation of liquid and solids is finished in the drum bowl. The high speed drum bowl take the inner drilling fluid rotate in a high speed.  Then the drilling fluid was thrown of to the drum wall and form a fluid ring.  The solid phase in the fluid ring are subjected to centrifugal forces hundreds or even thousands of times greater than their own gravity. The solids particles break the resistance of  fluid viscosity and to the inner wall form a solid layer, and the liquid form a fluid layer.  The ratio of the centrifugal force to the gravity of the solid particles in the fluid ring is called the separation factor of the Decanter Centrifuge. The bigger separation factors, the thinner of  separation particles.  In the oil drilling, the decanter centrifuge can be divided i three types.


a).  Lower speed centrifuge. This type decanter centrifuge is also called barite recycle centrifuge. Its separator factor is 500-700. For the lower density solids phase,  its separation size is 6-10 micron meters. For the higher density solids phase, its separation size is 4-7 micron meters.

b). Middle speed centrifuge. This type decanter centrifuge is 800, it can separate 5-7 micron meters' solids. This type is the most using one, using in removing the harmful solids, control mud density and viscosity.

c). High speed centrifuge. This type's centrifuge's separation factor is 1200-2100, the separation size is 2-5 micron meters, and also using in removing the harmful solids. control the mud density and viscosity. It is commonly used in series with low-speed centrifuge to form a two-engine system.  In this system, the lower speed decanter centrifuge is the first phase, the separation barite is sent back to the mud tank to recover the barite.  The liquid discharged by lower speed centrifuge is into a buffer tank. Then using a pump to suction this fluid to feeding in high speed decanter centrifuge. After the high speed decanter centrifuge, the solids is discharged to outside of tank, and the liquid into the recycling system. Using two equipment, both can remove the harmful solids, also escape the waste of barite.

The high speed centrifuge also has VFD type. The frequency can be adjusted.

Decanter Centrifuge's usage in solids control industry

Since the lats 1980s, Decanter centrifuge has been widely used in the national oil industry(especially in deep wells and horizontal wells ). It is the dispensable solids control equipment. Decanter centrifuge includes spiral subsidence type, sieve water type, hydraulic turbine type and so on. In the oil and gas drilling industry, the most commonly used is Horizontal spiral sedimentation type centrifuges. And this horizontal decanter centrifuge also has low speed, middle speed and high speed.

Decanter Centrifuge's Structure: Main motor, Back drive motor,Hydraulic couplings, Drum bowl, Differential mechanism and Feeding pump etc.


The main motor drives the roller by driving the pulley on the roller through the belt wheel on the hydraulic coupling. The drum bowl is supported on two bearings. In the drum bowl, there is a screw propeller, the screw propeller is supported on the middle of shaft of drum bowl.  The differential is installed on the bigger side of drum bowl, it is a planetary gear reduction mechanism structure. The output shaft of the differential connects with the propeller and then make the propeller spiral. The input shaft at the right end of the differential is equipped with a pulley, which is driven by the auxiliary pulley to provide the differential input speed.  

The Decanter Centrifuge's Drum bowl is installed in a stainless steel box. The stainless box has two cabins, the left cabin collects the discharged fluid of centrifuge, and the right cabin collect the discharged solids from centrifuges.

Desander and Desilter's difference

The diameter of the hydrocyclone's upper parts is the important factor which decide the hydrocyclone's treating capacity and separation size. The diameter of the cylinder is called the nominal size of the cyclone. The lower cone part's angle is between 15-20 degrees. The diameter of underflow mouth is 10-30 mm. Generally, a group of hydrocyclones which nominal size is 150-300mm, is called Desander. And a group of hydrocyclones which nominal size is 50-125mm, is called Desilter.





According to the treating capacity required, the desander has one to three hydrocyclones. Each hydrocyclone's treating capacity is no less than 20-120m3/h under the pressure of 0.2 Mpa. The normal working hydrocyclones can remove 95% of particles bigger than 74 micron meters and 50% of particles bigger than 40 micron meters. In order to improve the using efficiency, in choosing the hydrocyclones, the treating capacity must be 125% of whole drilling capacity.


According to the treating capacity required, the desilter has more than 4 pieces of hydrocyclones. Each hydrocyclone's treating capacity is no less than 5-15m3/h under the pressure of 0.2 Mpa. The normal working hydrocyclones can remove 95% of particles bigger than 40 micron meters and 50% of particles bigger than 15 micron meters. The desilter can remove 12-13 micron meters' barites. So the desilter can not be used in treating heavier drilling fluid. In choosing the desilter, the treating capacity must be 125%-150% of whole drilling fluid capacity.

Hydrocyclone desander and hydrocyclone desilter is the second and third grade cleaning equipment in the whole solids control system. It is combined with inlet pipes, discharge pipes, one group of hydrocyclones, cleaning shaker, bottom base and support parts. Like the following photo show.

The hydrocyclone's working principle is as below show:

The Hydrocyclone is combined with upper shell, lower shell and underflow mouth. The upper shell is cylindrical type, then forming an inlet. There is an inlet pipe on the side and a vortex tube on the top of center, then forming an overflow mouth. The lower shell is conical and has a general cone Angle for 15-20 degrees. The bottom is underflow mouth, the solids is discharged from this mouth.

When the drilling fluid which contain a certain flow rate and pressure through into the hydrocyclone from inlet mouth's tangential direction and swivel in a high speed, under the centrifugal force, the heavy solids in the drilling fluid was thrown off to the inner shell of hydrocyclones and down, finally discharged from underflow mouth. The lighter solids and drilling fluid form a upper vortex, and then discharged from overflow mouth.

Mongoose Shale Shaker and Working Principles

Mongoose shale shaker contains three parts: 1). screen box and angle adjustment, 2) vibration, 3). shaker screen locking. The Mongoose shale shaker is linear motion shale shaker. The unique design of the screen box can provide maximum screening rate and make the solid phase discharged from screen more dry.

The Mongoose shale shaker screens is superior to general screen. Usually, the first screen is horizontal position. It will be submerged the drilling fluid 1-2 inches deep. the drilling fluid pool will produce uniform hydraulic pressure on the screen which increase the size of first screen capacity. Normally, the submerged drilling fluid in the screen box extends to the end of the second screen. The third screen is used separation the drilling fluid which separated by first and second screen. When the drilling fluid flow changed or flow rate reduced, the drilling fluid from the second screen to the third screen, then from the third screen to guide plate, and then become a fluid pool to escape the drilling fluid's wash away.  The angle adjust can up to 3 degree, below can adjust -5 degree.  When the flow rate bigger, the angle of screen deck can increase the depth of fluid pool. The deep fluid pool can escape the fluid' wash off.

The vibrating includes two vibrating motors, this two motors can produce 2-4.5g 's vibrating force, the amplitude is 3.2mm. The mongoose shaker screen's tension is using the fixed block, its easy to install.
